(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. In tho amateur billiard championship E. V. Roberts defeated A. Bowie, in the final, 2000 up, by 355 points. Roberts' average was 10.5, and Bowie's 8.6.

TAUMARUNIT, this day

An Jl-roomed, two-storeyed dwelling on Matapuna road was destroyed by fire at 6 o'clock this morning-. The outbuildings alone were saved. The occupants saved a few clothes. The house was owned and occupied by A. H. Gregory. The building was valued at £2OOO, and was covered for £I2OO in tho Government office. The furniture was insured for £l5O in the same office.

WANGANLT, this day

Mr. P. L. Hollings, stipendiary magistrate, is leaving tho magistracy at the end of the month, returning to Wairarapa, where ho will contest the Masterton seat at the general election. Mr. Hollings was for many years mayor of Master ton, where he resided for 25 years.

A.good deal of indignation is shown locally at the constant remands asked for by tho prosecution in the charge of murder against Louis Taldy. A sixth remand was granted this morning, owing to the Government an: alyst's report on the clothing sent for examination not being complete. Mr. W. J. Trcadwell, for the accused, commented strongly on the delay and suspense to the accused. The. Magistrate, Mr. Hollings, agreed that a man should not be held indefinitely in custody with a serious charge hanging over his head.

In the Court of Appeal, Mr. Jell)coo continued his argument in tho fcjnlam:ui case. Ho contended it was not open to the Court to order an absolute writ of habeas corups to decide questions of breaches of covenant in a deed of separation between husband and wil'e. This, he said, was what the Supreme Court had dono in the present case. Argument is proceeding. A conference of representatives of tho Auckland Wellington, North Canterbury, and Otago Hospital Boards opened this morning. Mr. F. Castle, chairman of tho Wellington Board, presided. On the motion of Mr. Wallace (Auckland), it was decided to approve of tho principle of forming a Hospital Boards' Association, with a view to safeguarding tho interests of Boards against any department encroachments.

Galbraith, recently fined for seditious language, is not the selected labor candidate for Napier. Mr. L. Mcllvride is tho candidate chosen by the party and Mr. Galbraith is not recognised by it.
