DUNEDIN, this day. Joseph Switalla was charged at the Police Court with attempting to murder his step-brother. Jacob Switalla stated that on December 24 he was lying on a couch in his step-mother’s house at Allanton. Accused came in under the influence of liquor. The next thing witness realised was three or four blows on the head with something. As lie rose ho was struck on the back of the neck. He got on his feet, and saw accused with an axe. The latter went to strike him again, but his step-mother interfered. Witness went outside. Accused followed and struck him on the head with a rail. There had been no previous ill-feeling. He thought the accused was jealous because he was getting on better with his step-mother,- accused’s mother. The accused was committed for trial, reserving his defence.
