DEATH OF OLD SETTLER.
(Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day
Another very old settler, in the person of Mrs. Charlotte Torr, passed away at 3.30 a.m. on Sunday at the age of 74 years. She was born at Wairoa in 1848, her father being Mr. William Lewis, who commanded various small craft in the early days of Wairoa. Her mother, Krena Wliarekcri, was of cbieftainess rank. She was married at Petane in 1862, at the age of 14 years, to Mr. J. M. Torr, who survives her. She lived here during all the troublous times, only once leaving the district, when she fled with her three children at the time of the Mohaka massacre. She bore the reputation of being the hardest-working woman in the district, and was ever ready to do a good turn. She leaves 96 descendants, namely 14 children, 59 grandchildren, and 23 great grandchildren, and in carnival week was preparing to celebrate her diamond wedding. She leaves four daughters at Wairoa —.Mrs. O Winter, Mrs. J. H. Smith, Mrs. O'Rielly, and Miss A. Torr; also Mrs. If. Cooper, Gisborne; Mrs. 1). Couper, Frascrtown; Mrs. F. Smith, Wanganui; Mrs. Fryer, Otawa, Waiuku; Mrs. H. J. Dnvey, Napier; and Mrs. J. Hall, Dunedin; and four sons —Constable J. Torr and C. Torr, Wairoa; Arthur Torr, West Australia; and J. Torr, Gisborne. One son, Ernest, was killed at the front. The funeral took place at 2 p.m. to-day.
