Leslie Reynolds atlendod and re. ported on the work of the Stout sireet bridge, discussing at length figures of the cost of construction of other bridges. Another mixer, he said was being font to the. Board by Mr. Palmer for use on ilia Stout, street bridge. In answer to Mr. Gardiner the chairman stated that the bridges weie expected to cost £SOO or £6OO above the loan, hut this included costs other than ihe actual construction. An extract from the Gazette notified that the Board bad been appointed a licensing authority under the Explof ivc.-> and Dangerous Goods Amendment Act, 1920.—-Received. The. Cook County Council advised that £176 3s 3d, the amount- of the interest for the current year was duo on December 1. 1921.—Received. Messrs Burnard and. Bull, the Bond's solicitors, notifie 1 having prepared a draft debenture for the'loan proposed to be raised from, the Public Trustee for the purpose of reducing the bank overdraft. They had submitted the draft to the Public Trustee for approval and had received a reply. The reply stated, inter alia : “I have now to advise you that- I am informed by my head office that, at the present time, there is liliie prospect of this application being considered by Clio office. The Public Trustee is unable to stale for what term the loan would ho granted and what the rate of interest would be at the tune the same was granted, if the application is eventually approved by the OlficIn -est incut Board. Under' the circumstance.'?, it is not possible to approve of ,vour draft debenture, which I am returning.—lt was decided to hold the letter over. —The chairman stated that, he thought the position would eventually right itself. The Commissioner of Taxes advised of amendments to the Finance Act in connection with the ‘collection of income tax on the interest on debentures issued by local authorities.—-Received. It was decided, on the motion of ibo 1 chairman, to appoint Air R,. Thelwall dog-tax collector for the ensuing year, and that the rate be 5s for all dogs except. sheep and cattle dogs, which are to be charged at 2s Cd each.—-Carried. The Look Hospital Board acknowledged
receipt of a cheque for the full amount of the Hoard's capital levy for 1921. Received. The Department of Health forwarded several circulars regarding plague prevention and the destruction c.f rats.— Mr. Redstone thought that rats were not very plentiful in Mangapapa now.—The chairman stated that he had not seen one for months.
, The l State Advances Office notified that the amount of £IOOO Had been lodged at the bank in, regard to the bridges’ lean. The gross amount of the loan was £5220. . —Received The Poverty Ray Motor Association wrote stating that the New Zeal-md Automobile Union are urging the- Government to make it compulsory for e\ery vehicle, whether horse driven or me -lianicallv'propelled, to carry a rear light. The communication requested the Board’s support.— Mr. Gardiner considered that the letter should be supported.—lt -.-ns eventually decided, on (he motion of the chnhman, seconded by Mr. Stubbing?, that the communication be received. The Fire Board informed the Board that should the brigade’s services be called on ill connection with any fires in the Town Board’s area, that only the actual wages of (lie firemen employed would he charged.—On the chairman's motion it was decided that (he Fire Board be notified that the Board was agreeable to the. suggestion. Under dale January 13, the Chief I*->st-master, in reply to an enquiry from OnBoard, stated that it is hoped Ini instal the cabinet of a slot telephone within a few weeks. The matter had been held up owing to the inability to obtain the necessary fittings.—-Received. Members expressed approval of the not ifieatioiv * It was decided that the clerk should write to the Health Inspector regard big the smell coming* from the vent- Tune's from the sewer line from the Cook Hospital in Mangapapa read.—This matter had been brought up by Mr. Gardiner, who stated that at times an awful smell came from the vent pipes. Residents in the vicinity had been complaining of it. Mr. Gardiner proposed that action be taken against, a Maori who had erected a tin shanty in Elm street, for building without a permit, and for creating a nuisance.—Mr. Stubbing* seconded pr.i forma.—Mr. Gardiner stated that the shanty was unfit, for fowls to live in.— Mr. Stubbing* thought that a .builder, who was erecting a house, without sub milling plans, should also be prosecuted. Of course, he said, the shanty was absolutely a nuisance.—The motion was eventually carried, it being decided that the builder of another house, should also be written to regarding his not. submitting the plans. On Thursday last, stated Mr. Gardiner, there was a narrow escape from a serum accident between a motor car and a cyclist at the intersection of Ormond and Mangapapa rqads. There!was a hedge at the spot and he considered that this would be the cause of a serious accident one day, as it obscured the view. It was decided that the owner of the property he written to request # that the hedge he cut to a reasonable height. > Messrs Redstone and Gardiner brought up the matter of the present state o; some of the roads and footpaths.—lt was eventualy decided'that 50 yards of Kaiti shingle he obtained for the Board’s ore for metalling. '
