THROUGH OTIRA TUNNEL.

SUCCESSFUL JOURNEY. The Otira Gorge road being blocked by snow, a party of West Coasters went through the Otira tunnel on Saturday. The trip of 5£ miles underground was commenced at 1 p.m., with an electric locomotive on at each end. (iood progress was made, and with the tunnel lit, up with electric lights, the party hardly realised they were underground. After about, three miles the small unfinished portion was reached, and with so much scaffolding in evidence, slower progress was made. This portion passed, a. good pace was again established, the journey taking a little over one hour. Christchurch was reached on lime.

Tt was the largest party to come through tbe. funnel, and the passengers were the first to be carried right through bv electricity.
