SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.

WON 13 V ARNST BY THREE LENGTHS. (Per Press Association.) BLENHEIM, this day. Arnst won by tnree lengths. Tune, 22 minutes, 38 seconds. WANGANUI, this day. A challenge has been issued on behalf of Durey Hndiield to row lire winner of tne Hannan-Arnst lace. A deposit o'i £25 has been lodged.

The following is the recent history of the championship:—Amst first won the Lille, defeating Win. Webb (the holder) on December i 5, ISO 3, on the Wanganui river (X.Z.). He then successfully defended lis title against Webb (on the Wanganui river on June 22, 1900 J, against G. Welch (at Akaroa harbor, N.Z., on April 4, 1910), against E. Barry (on the Zambesi, Rhodesia, on August 18, 1910), and against H. Pearce (on the Parramatta river, Sydney, on July 11, 1911). On July 29, 1912, he lost the title to Ernie Barry over the Putney to Mortiake course on the Thames. Barry then successfully defended the title against three challengers (Human, Pearce, and Paddon), until he lost it to A. D. Felton on the Thames on October 27, 1919. Baity regained it from Felton on the Parramatta on August 23 last. And then Arnst regained it by default through non-acceptance of his challenge.

Writing prior to the race the Dominion states: —Both men have, according to reports, undergone a thorough preparation, and both are said to he lit to row the race of their lives. Ik. must not be. forgot ten in computing the chances of the two men that Arnst is twelve years older than when he last rowed and beat Webb an the Wanganui liver. il is nearly eleven years ago since Arnst beat- the Londoner, Barry, oil the Zambesi. It is said that tho years take their toll, and youth will he served, so that if Arnst —who in the interim gave tip wager boat ' racing for some years—is able to beat a very much younger man in Paddy Hannan (who a few months ago easily defeated W. Fogwell over the same course he is to row on Saturday), he may lay claim to be tin exceptional man. The risk in Hannan’s case may be his “football knee.” This went back on him in bis race with Webb on the Wanganui river, but apparently held up in the Fogwell event. Still Hanan is a sculler of some exper-. ience, and has the advantage in age, and should make a good showing against his redoubtable opponent. It is stated that W. Fogwell intends to challenge the wibner of the Arnst-ITannan race.
