ROWING.

L.V.A. SHIELD COMPETITIONS. GISBORNE ROWING CLUB’S CREWS A' considerable amount of interest is being taken in the training of the Vepresentative fours from each of the local rowing clubs for the annual inter-club competitions for the Licensed Victuallers’ Association’s Shield, TJie- crews are training keenly, and the experience of practised coaches has been placed at the, ‘service of either club, with the result that the style and pace in each section of the competition promises this season to be outstanding. An old rower of very considerable experience offers the following ' comments, without offence, on the rowing of the Gisborne Club’s scuipr , four : This crew is of an effective weight, and ‘well balanced, but gives the impression that finish is lacking. The..paddle, work is ragged and untidy, and witli the exception of No. 3 the dipping is not good. Btroke and bow almost continually dip deep, while No. 2 washes out at the end 8f his stroke. Tho slides throughout are fairly good, and are improving. The stroke, C. R. Moore, is a good strong oar who never spares himself. He does not get all tho water lie might-, owing to a habit of pulling before lie 'catches the water. No. 3, A. Langridge, is in liis right place, and is a hard worker ; has a good swing, and a, goqd, catch .and dip.- He would look.belter with a straighter back. No. 2, P. Nolan, .rows, the best style in the boat, and- bis slide is worth copying. lls is inclined, however, when an extra effort, is called for, .to swing across the boat, finishing- into his oar. , Bow. T. Hay, lias improved considerably lately, and with his dipping put right and his.back straightened a little, would leave little to ho desired. For his weight he is a strong oar.
