SCORE PARK IMPROVEMENTS.
s MR. G. E. DARTOIvS PLANS. A Herald reporter -was to-day afforded an opportunity of viewing the plans prepared by Mr. G. E. Darton for the development of the Score Park as a publicasset. The plans are 1 said to be an example of excellent landscape artistry, and certainly apppul to the lay ’mind. The park, is of an area of some nine Acres, and this’is broken suitably by the construction of walks - and trucks, together with a handsome drive for vehicular traffic. The latter runs from the Score road entrance to the Huralnira road entrance, circling the rotunda situated in. the centre of the park. On three sides of Jrlie area are to bo planted heavy shelter trees, which will form a handsonifc background to the smaller shrubs, all of flowering varieties, which are to he planted in The central space. In compliance with Tliy request of Ivaili residents, provision has been made for tennis courts and a croquet lawn, in the angle adjacent to the Huralnira road ontrance, and the, ground, as it slopes towards tho -river, will be terraced and provided with' seats' for the public. The nature of the area indicates that it should prove a most appropriate site for public entertainments, such as open-air concerts, the situation alongside the Waimata river also lending beauty to the whole ensemble. A bathing shod for swimmers is to b° elected on the T ’oint known as Score Point, whence bathing in the river may be enjoyed. Conveniences for the public are provided for, as is • also a squill enclosure for the care of young children. •, Along the riverbank heavy shelter trees will be planted at intervals. A special entrance by .right-of-way has been arranged from Heba street, by the generosity'.of pro-nertv-owners who have recognised the need for access to the park in as nearly a straight line from town as possible. A: detail of the plan is the creepercovered pergola separating the tennis courts from the croquet lawn. , ( One of'tlie features that commends itself greatly is that the plan gives ample Scope for immediate improvement on the grounds without demanding the expenditure of a great deal of .money. The "Planting of tho- heavy screening plantations and the shelter trees should be commenced at- once, the smaller details,.such as the formation of fern rockeries, paths, tennis courts, #nd buildings being taken in band at a later date, when possibly.' finance 9 will be more easily arranged than'.at the present . .
