— ■■'; ■ ■ ■> The monthly meeting of the Te Hapara gisborne West) school committee as heli; last evening, Mr. G. K. Paslcy presiding. There were also present: Messrs R Fredericks. W. Priestley, A. Hepburn, C Carmichael, L. Marshall, and T. Wilson (hon. secretary). The report of the headmaster, Mr. •E. C- Farani, for thi preceding month, stated that the attendance m the primer classes has been very low, owing to the prevalence of whoopingcough. The average roll for the ' month was 440 and the attendance 370, though yesterday iit had reached 395, .which was a great improvement. Misses Pugh, Black, and Widestrom had been absent owing to sickness, but all returned on Monday last. Miss Price, relieving teacher, had completed her stay on th*? 10th inst. The headmaster recommended an increase' of 10s per month m the salary of the caretaker, on account of aaditiopal work that was necessary. With regard to the extra water taps and standards the addition of the lady teach ers' room dispensed with a drinking tap, while the addition of the two class-rooms added 21 windows, and no extra tap had been installed for "the purpose of- cleaning same. A recommendation was made for the installation of further taps for drinking and cleaning purposes, the expenditure on which, estimated at £-i would be paid by the Education Board. The head•tmaster also suggested that a lawn roHei be obtatned \for the lawns ' round the school. The school sports are to be held next week, and the combined schools have drawn up a programme for the same. The profits of the sports It is. intended to devote to the purchase of material for the use of the children. Permission was requested -for the closing of 'the school for tbe day 6f the spoils, and also tor the' preceding day, Thursday, and it was suggested that that holiday re-? place tlie Dominion Day holiday ou Mori day. The report was adopted and thr recommendations tof Ihe headmaster were passed. Jt was decided to grant the Thursday holiday and .to observe poihinion Day on Monday. September 27th., The Inspector's annual report was re ceived, and was considered very .satisfactory. A vote of sympathy was accordHi to Mi*. Faram on account of illness witli wliich his family was afflicted. Account-- amounting to £12 % 13s Id wer passed for payment.
