WAR MEMORIAL FUNDS.
(To the Editor of the Herald.) "Sir.—l read witli interest tl\e remarks of the secretary of aliove fund, and dO not. wonder at his disappointment over the sniall amount that has been contributed 'towards such a, worth object. This apppai for funds should have the support of not only the man who owns sheep, but of every section of the community m proportion to their means. The committee are, only asking for a moderate, amount of £10.000, and so far have only got about £3000. This amount will only put up a very small monument whicli would not be creditable to ihe iistrict known as "Gisborne the (Golden." I would like to point out that our neighbors m Hawke's Bay have subscribed over £35,000 towards a war memorial. I notice one of. the clubs here have subscribed about half of our total amount,' but what arc the other clubs doing? What are our three racing- clubs doing? Every public bodyshould assist m this object and very few of them have done soi There are several of our largest wholesale firms and also many of the largest retail firms that, have so far made no contribution. Is this fair to those who have lost their sons to enable these people to carry on? One does not.- like to be too personal m these matters, but-there, are men m Ihis district whose Incomes run into many thousands a year who have as yet not contributed a copper. I hope to yet see a, liberal response from those wlio have as yet not subscribed and who can very well afford to do so. I am, etc. A SUBSCRIBER.
