SUGQESTED CONFERENCE.
Interviewed to-day regarding • *he iproposed conference on the subject of Wai-
karemoana and Waikohu, Mr. H. D. de Laiitour, chairman of directors of the Waikohu llydro-Electvical Company, remarked tlifit his company had embarked .)ir tho development 'of Waikohu after obtaining the best engineering advice, it was plainly demonstrated that Waikohu .could supply, Poverty Bay very much cheapen than . Waikaremoana. This conclusion *was arrived at after making the fullest investigation. It was ridiculous 'then to suggest that this company should be turned by a few laymen from its objects and its definite policy, which was arrived at. as he said, after 00---taining the fullest possible details and the best engineering advice.
"It would be quite idle and an utter waste of time," Mr. deLautour continued, ''for this company to meet the borough m conference. The Mayor should realise that as chairman of this company I could not ask our engineers to meet a number of laymen who could not
understand tha technical details that they would submit, this latter especially m view of the fact that the 'only estimates of costs submitted have been given by our engineers and, their accuracy questioned by councillors. If the Mayor has any ieport to make which has been drafted by any independent consulting electrical'engineer, then a conference might be arranged. But aY present it would be foolish for me to ask my directors to meet .tile Council, which has nothing to Submit, m conference. ''The Waikaremoana cost is not to be compared with Waikohu. as is plainly shown by the following figures:—
Installation m Total Per Source. h.p. cost. h.p. £ £ *Colerldge ... 8,000 403,1f>7 50.4 *Waipori ; ... s.ooo 508,353 63.54 Manganao ... 2i,000 1,720,000 71.0 Arapuni ... 96,000 5,815,000 G0.5 Waikaremoana ... 40,000 2,465,000 (51.6 Southland ... 8,000 1,400,000 175 Waiohine ... 3,000 200,000 tf6.GG Waikohu ... 8,00.0 230,000 28.75 ♦Signifies actual cost completed: the others estimated cost. "In face ,of these figures, surely if borough councillors are anxious to do the best for Gisborne, they will employ a :onsulting engineer to verify this statement." ■
