A MEMBER'S REPLY.

CHRISTGHURCH, this day. Asked whether he had received a "please explain" from the New Zealand Sports Protection League, Mr McCoombs, , M.P., said: "I did not leave tho League . in doubt as to where I stood on the totalisator. The one vital question in which the League was interested was cleverly worded. The Parliamentary candidates were asked to oppose any curtailment of legitimate privileges in conI nection with sport, knowing the real object of the so-cailed Sports Protection League. I realised what, was hidden behind the legal and legitimate, and while I readily agreed not to restrict spcrt, including horse racing, I made it perfectly ! clear that in the interests of clean sport I would appose the continuance of the totalisator The fact is that, no member of Parliament who was supported by the Welfare League voted for Mr Isitt's motion. Some of the members who were supported by the churches because of their attitude on the licensing question were much embarrassed by Mr Isitt's motion. Personally I think the Sports Protection League has no influence whatever at election time. It is the biggest bluff political organisation in existence, and it could easily be. combated by a counter-organisation." — Herald Special.
