GISBORNE SCHOOL.
*» — . — The first monthly meeting of the newly-elected committee of the Gisborne School was held last evening. .The business was of a routine nature only, and the meeting was a short one, in* the absence of the chairman, the Rev. Jas. Altken took the chair, and there were ' present also: Mesdames Clrurch and Hooper, and Messrs. p. J. Wainwright, Sawyer, McMullen, McCullough, and McMurray. During the course of a discussion, the. financial position of the committee came under review, and the necessity for more liberal allowances for the upkeep of the school became apparent, it was decided to lay the position of the committee before the Education Board. I The headmaster's report showed" that the school had suffered from the prevailing epidemic, the attendance for the ' »ast two months having fallen to 86 per cent, of the roll number. The number of teachers who had been absent through sickness was also exceptional. The concreting of a portion ol the grounds statte4 m the last mid-summer holidays and h(\Jd. up by the shortage 01 cement is still uncompleted, and Mr Lancaster, the contractor, wrote asking for, and obtained, permission to holdover completion of the work tiU next mid-summer.
