Nosworthy for ' the Minister for Pußlfc Works, which touched at some length updn objections to narrow gauge railways. The letter stated that the authorities all over the world generally ngreed that a, break of gauge only be adopted m tji.e case of a< railway which could not bo connected with th'e ; general railway .".system , pf the country: It was decided td communicate with the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce on ttia subject, with a view to ascertaining what action it is taking ia the matter, and offering to co-operate. The secretary of the Mqtamata Chamber of Commerce wrote advising .that tho chamber is now organising for the purpopo of obtaining subscriptions for a 'trial survey for a line between Mataraata and Tauranga. . , • ■ Sir Wijliam Herri'es wrote acknowledging receipt -of a letter urging that a survey be made for the railway from Touranga to Matamata. ;He stated that he -would have pleasure m submitting the request to the Minister f,or'^Public Works. Canvassers reported that $193 19s had already been -promised towards the cost of a trial survey of the light railway line. It Was decided to bold &..
