A deputation which included the Mayor, the secretary of the local branch ; of the Australian Workers' Union, and the president of the Industrial Council, told Mr. Carey that unless he agreed to act in compliance with the resolution cabled yesterday the people were determined to devise means to bring about the desired effect. It was not desired to use forde. Other statements were that it would be absolutely criminal to allow Mr. Carey and his colleagues to remain in charge, and their refusal to resign would precipate one of the biggest revolutions Australia had seen. A demand was made that the three officials leave without consulting the Minister. Eventually, after declaring that they would not be coerced, Messrs Carey, Evans, and Bevan agreed to advise the Minister that they were resigning, and departing by' the next steamer under a promise that they would receive reasonable assistance from the people.
