WELLINGTON, last night. Leslie George Donaldson, charged witli being a bookmaker and betting in a hotel, was fined £20.

Chief Judge Jackson Palmer, of the Native Land Court, died this morninp from lethargic encephalitis. He had been i'l for the past four months and for a week his condition had been such that his death was not unexpected. He leaves a vidow, but no family. Sergeant C. W. Lopdell was presented •with a gold watch and chain, and an in. scribed medal from all the N.C.OVs and men in the uniform branch throughout New Zealand in recognition of bis service, on behalf of the uniform men. at the -recent Commission of Inquiry in connection with the police force. At the special meeting of the New Zealand Golf Council, it was decided to accede to strong representations made by the Napier Club and revert to the original^ dates for the New Zealand championships. The meeting will open on September 1, and will last a week.

AUCKLAND, last night. The Auckland branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, decided to withhold all moneys from headquarters until that body hands over unconditionally to the Auckland provincial committee all the amounts due to it under the decision of the recent conference that' the provincial committee shall receive for organisation purposes two shillings out ol the four shillings capitation fee paid to headquarters by branch associations. The opinion was expressed that the action of headquarters in not fulfilling the letter or spirit of the conference decision was to block political propaganda. Sevei'al members spoke of cutting adrift from tbe New Zealand body if the pre sent course were persisted in by headquarters. The Auckland branch membership approaches ten thousand.
