MELBOURNE, June 4.— Though Australia willneed a large navy some day, it is not likely that the Commonwealth Government will skek many 'gift ships from Great Britain,- because of the expense of upkeep. To run H.M.A.S. Australia CQsts the Commonwealth from £200,000, to £250,000 a year. Tlie pay of tho 900 officers < and men absorbs approximately £135,000'; coal, oil, stores and so on make up the remainder. A light cruiser, such as H.M.A.S. Melbourne, costs approximately £100,000 a year, the officers and crew, about 450 men, absorbing say £67,000. A torpedo boat costs approximately £20,000 a year.
