SOCIAL REFORMS FORECASTED.
GOVERNING CLASS ON TRIAL *> LONDON, Dec. 30. ; The Sunday papers sum up the election as a personal triumph or Mr. Lloyd George m the disappearance of I two great parties, the Liberals and the ; Irish Nationalists. The papers, with. | out exception, emphasise the ejection [not merely as a great triumph, but as a. great opportunity for Mi\ Lloyd George to declare that the country, having won the war, means to win peace, not -merely by imposing strong stern justice on its enemies, but by insisting upon a vast programme of social reforms. The governing classes were on their trial and if they failed to satisfy the country which is impatient of the game of politics as hitherto played, a painful reckoning awaited . them. In this connection it is pointed out that Labor largely voted for Coalition m the expectation of securing a policy agreeable to Labor. Mr. G. N. Barnes interviewed, stated that he was of opinion »that the country had turned against everyone who had not whole-heartedly supported the war. He believed the Labor Party fiad lost a great chance by truckling to tho Bolsheviki. The analysis of the polling shows that London, and Scotland polled less than half th* total electorates of the English boroughs, the counties a little over half, and Wales just half. Mr C. Trevelyan shared the fate of other pacifists. The well-known Laborrte, Mr F. W. Jowett, also was defeated by a Coalitionist. For the nine Belfast seats, six Unionists, two Labor Unipn--IS*S > and* one Nationalist were- returned. Only the following remain of the Nationalist Party :< J,> Devlin, T; P. O'Connor, Captain Redmond, P. Don?T Uy 'Tr P - < °' Dollert y- E - J - Kelly; J. Mac Veaeh and T. Harbison.
