LATE GENERAL DAVIES.
(Special to tn« Herald.) V WELLINGTON, this day. ) The. death of " Major-General R. H. Da-vies, C.8., deprives New Zealand of a distinguished soldier who wouiu. ■ m all probability, had he lived, have succeeded to th« position of Commandant of New Zealand Forces when the war ended. His death was not unexpected, for he was not m good health at the commencement oi the war, 'and the hardships of the retreat *\>rn Mons and the battle of the Marne made further inroads on his constitution. _ A paragraph has been circulating m New Zealand, suggesting that an important headquarters appointment was to be given to a. New Zealand ,o~.cer at present at the front, but the Minister fo? Defence informs me that no foundation exists for this statement.
