PRICE OF BREAD.
A conference between liepresentativies of local master bakers and the Hon. W. 1). S. MacDoiiald, President of the Board of Trade, took place this afternoon respecting the price of bread, which it will bs noticed from this issue the Board of Trade has gazetted to be sold at s£d' per 21b loaf and lid per 41b loaf, or at 6d per 21b loaf and: Is per 41b loaf (for delivery exceeding three miles). The Minister intimated he had received a telegram from the Board of Trade, stating they had considered the position further and the representation placed before them, and! suggested as a compromise the following : lid) for cash over the counter or delivered, with Id extra for booking. Tlie deputation, comprising Messrs A. G. Beere, W. Finlay, and Archibald ' (Fryer and Co.), concurred with the proposal, stating that they would fix . the prices as follows : Gash over counter, s£d for 21b loaf, or lid. for 4[b loaf; •booked, aaid delivered, 6d for. 2lb loaf and Is for 41b loaf. . Tlie Minister said that being so, he would wire to Wellington to cancel tlie previous Order-in-Oouncil iiuid re-issue a neivr order. The deputationists stated that they had come fully armed with information for Mr. Mac Donald's consideration. The Minister remarked he fully real--1 ised their difficulties. Mr. Beere stated that they had had to pay as much as £18 a ton for' flour, and £9 6s 5d freight and charges on I 70 sacks from Auckland. „ i The Minister : They can only charge £16 a ton at Auckland. I Mr. Beere : But this was Australian flour. Mr Beere further explained that the cost of delivery worked out on two businesses averaged at a little over 1 l-8d per loaf for delivery alone. The price will therefore remain as at present, except that there will be id reduction for the 21b. loaf sold over the counter. ! —
