THE NEW OFFENSIVE.
GERMANS ABANDON COSTLY TACTICAL BLOWS'. ALLIES READY FOR NEXT ATTACK (Australian and N.Z Cable Association.) LONDON, May 17. Mi*. Phillip Gibbs writes: — The long postponement of the enemy's assault seefms definite proof that his losses m the earlier offensive were so heavy that he was obliged to abandon his costly tactical blows m order to prepare a new battle on a wide front. Mr. Gibbs opines that the enemy will not strike until he has completed his fresh formations and their special training m order to resume an offensive on something like the scale of that of March 21. It is true that the process may be near i completion, but we have gained invaluable time and the enemy theroby has lost the greatest,„ perhaps his only chance- of victory. Our gaps have been refilled and our troops rested and refreshed. The British, .with French assistance, will not again be obliged to bear the brunt m an unequal struggle.
