Sir Douglas Haig reports :— The activity of the enemy's artillery and trench mortars increased this morning" north of the Somme, followed by strong infantry attacks between the Somme 'and the neighborhood of Bucq«oy. Latest reports show that the Germans achieved practically no success anywhere, tha fighting resulting m further heavy enemy losses. We successfully attacked on the Ham front m the neighborhood of - -Hebuterne, j taking 200 prisoners and a few machine- i guns. . i The enemy did not attack to-day on the British 'front south, of the Somme. Yesterday's fighting was of the severest and most persistent nature, the enemy repeatedly assaulting our positions'east, of Viliers and Brettonneux. Rain and < mist yesterday interfered with air operations.' We -brought down >even- German machines and one of ours - missing. Two previously missing have returned. We* dropped 22 heavy bombs at midday today on rail stations at Luxemburg and many burst on the railway, causing a .large fire.' Despite, considerably anti-aircraft gunfire, all our machines returned.'LONDON, April 6 (2.25 p.m.) Sir Douglas Haig reports: — •North of the Somme heavy "fighting continued,, along the whole front sonth of Anriiette until late yesterday evening. Tjjaa enemy constantly attacked m considerable- -strength .with no further success. There was local fighting yesterday morning south of tjie Somme. Xn the neighborhood of Hahgard, we improved our position by counter-attacks. . At least ten German divisions were participating m the unsuccessful attacks yesterday north of the Somme, and the fighting was most "severe m many parts of this front as far northward as Bucquoy.
