There is an illuminating sentence in The New Statesman which is stated to be worth italicising in these days of margarine queues ■ and empty butchers' windows : "It is. literally true that -.there were at all times more /people hungry in England in the years of peace aiid prosperity, thftt, preceded the war than tliere are. now in the fourth year of unrestricted conflict , and expenditure." The lessened death-rate points the same encouraging moral. Where will it end ? Every mail brings word of advances in price. Freights are soaring, insurances are heavy, and raw material ia increasing daily in price. Almost without exception, the Home mail advises us that we must anticipate further advances, and this applies equally to American or Japanese goods. Some lines are prohibited. So high have prices advanced, that merchants prefer to cut them right out, as the public cannot possibly buy at the figure. We congratulate the firms that have had 'the foresight to lay in large stocks in anticipation of the present shortage. One firm stands right out in this respect, "The People's Empo*rium," which has a stock of between three and four thousand pounds worth of goods, all well bought, and one need only tp compare their prioes and qualities with others to be convinced that they offer better value. Some filling-in lines^ of course, have been, bought lately, but even in these cases the 'prices air© right. Profits are cut to a minimum, arid the public can still rely upon the fair and equitable treatment thoy have always re. ceived from "The People's £10^0™!!!^""'.
