REPEATED ASSAULTS BEATEN OFF. BRITISH SLIGHTLY PRESSED BACK. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Reuter's Telegram.) (Received April 6, 12.10 p.m.) LONDON, April 5. Sir Douglas Haig reports :. There was heavy fighting this afternoon and late this evening between the Luce River and the Somme. The onemy employed strong forces and delivered repeated assaults. y y These were beaten off iwith loss to the enemy, but we } were slightly pressed back to the eastward of villers and Benethoteux, where ottf positions were maintained. Enemy artillery northward of the* Somme was in action during tho night in the neighborhood of Bucquoy. and in the Scarpe Valley. We engaged hostiie concentrations in the neighborhood ofi Albert.
