i As the Result of the fires m the Wai- : marine district, there has been heavy mortality, of ..game and fish, says the .Wjngahui Chronicle. The Waimarino strums 'were particularly well stocked ■Mthti'but, but since the fire dead fish floating, and dazed fish swimming about, have been seen m thousands. It has been a, windfall for the Maoris, and trout for the time being is one of the principal articles of diet. The rush of the fire through the Waimarino forests played havoc with the native ■birds and imported game. In some pjaces where (he native pigpon was plentiful it has been exterminated. Californian quail «w-ero particularly numerous m many localities, but being ft class of bird with a short flight, it had kittle chance. A few miles south of Eaetihi it has not been an uncommon sight, during the past few days to see wild pigs, singed mid completely blind, roaming about the clearings.
