DEFENCE COMMISSION.

The. Commissioner held 1 a . preliminary sitting * to-day. It 'has not yet. been dcided wliether the inquiry shall' be open to the press. The , commission , comprises - Sir Jlotiert Murray -* McCheyne Anderson, <Brigadier- ' General *of ■ New South Wales, Mr. 'Peter Barr, of Dunedin, and Mr. Charles Rhodes, of Auckland, and is directed to inquire into, the following : (1) Headquarters and. other administrative branches of the service; (2) Methods of control of expenditure or supervision of expenditure; 3), Pay, and allowances pf the defence forces or of civilians engaged in services in relation to the war; (4) ( Military stores, equipment and.supplies; (5) . Military camps ; (6) Transport of troops; (7) Hospital .ships; (8) Mili.tary hospitals; (9) Medical and dental 'examinations and treatment; (10) Military Service Boards ; (11) All other matters involving public expenditure for the purposes of the war. The Com- . mission is asked 1 to report by June 30.
