APPEAL BOARD.

The Military Service Board concluded: its sitting yesterday, when the following additional cases were- dealt with :- Thomas Ryan, contmctoiv Wellington street, Gisborne. — Mr Coleman appealed, and produced certificates. Appeal allowed, classed O. James Burnett Sweeney, shepherd, Waimia, Tolaga Bay. — Withdrawn, classed C2. John Somerton, baker, Oswald street, fylangapapa. — Mrs Somerton appeared iri support of appeal that he was in class B.— Appeal allowed. Norman Douglas Fitzherbert Syipes, sheepfarmer, Puketane, Te Karaka.— The Chairman : You say you are the only> man on the farm?— Yes. — What size is it?— 3s6 acres. — Appellant deposed that the farm was leased since the war (1916) from his father. It waa a three-year lease — to 1918. He had worked the place for his father since 1908, having broken it in. His father was a bank manager at Auckland. Appellant employed casual labor just now and fpundtit difficult to get anyone. — To Capt. Beale : It was worth about £50 an acre. He had' a written agreement with his father for three years from June 1916. He had one brother at the war. Wifness was living on the property and married. Under the conditions of lease he could not re-lease it. — Capt. Beale : Would it not be possible to cancel the lease ?— No, not till the end of the war. — Have you approached' your father ? — No. I am quite prepared to go to the war. — Would you be prepared to cancel the lease? — Oh, yes. — Adjourned for further enquiries. . . Stanley Walter Stark, bootmaker, 113 Fox street, Whataupoko. — Dismissed, no appearance. Alf rid Sligo, motor mechanic, 21 Norman road, Gisborne. — Capt. Beale intimated thfe Department' was satisfied. Appeal allowed, class B. David Stewart Thompson, bank accountant^ 122. Sheehan street, Gisborne. — Capt. Beale made a similar announcement in thia case. Appeal allowed,, class C. William Charles Whitfield, : (junior), carrier, Muir street, Te Hapara. — Mr. Coleman appeared. Appellant stated he was Parting wool under contract from f ellmongery works Under Government control. He had made arrangements for a man to manage in his absence but he had. since dissappointed him. He had: three brothers at the war (two wounded) and. was . supporting his mother. Witness was married, second division. He was quite prepared to sell out at a sacrifice. The rrien [were doirig good work and the Board i did- not see any reason to call them up at present. / Mr. Coleman produced certificates required in the appeal of Albert Stephen Lewis, carpenter, Valley i-oad, Mangapapa, that had been adjourned until next sitting for. this purpose. I .The Board sat in camera to consider •the case of Daniel Thomas Quinn, station manager, Ahimanu, Tiniroto, and intimated that the case would be adjourned sine die until class C was oalled up. I Mr. Blair asked permission to bear tlie evidence in an .appeal ;that would come on next sitting to thus save a witness coming dowrt from the Coast again, that of David Bruce, sheepfarmer, Tokomaru Bay, in respect of his youngest son, Stanley. David Bruce deposed that he had' five sons, two in camp and one: at .he war in Egypt. The appeal was in respect of his •youngest . son, Stanley > who was the only one at home, . and was managing and -'doing work about the property, Ferriside, 3656 acres at Tokomaru Bay. Appellant was unable to 'do any work himself.'
