The following report wag presented* by the engineer at the meeting of ithej Council yesterday :— - ' ' i | Motu Riding: 'Improvement work isbeing carried out on Motu-Waitangii'ua road. Grader has beeii working on ' the Motu end section of M&tu front .road; Ncill road, between MalaVai and Motu, Jias been, metalled m worst places.;- near 5 'Armstrong's' mill the' road is 'being .widened, regraddd, • and ' formed, • preparatory to metalling. Neill road metalling: I have reoeived fresh tenders fromMr Honey for metalling 16 chains hear Beaufoy's, 10 chains near 22 mile peg-, and 20 chains on Eakauroa-Tahora load at 12s pel' oubic yard, metal to come from quarry near road at Rakaiiroa bridge. I have provisionally accepted this for the bottom ballast only, as the metal is not suitable for wearing coat. For the wearing coat of eight ; cubic yards per chain the metal will have to dome from the quai'ry on roadman's section, Tahora road, or frbm ; isandsttorie outcrop near Rakauroa-' station, i MrHoney was nOtified-^-the price depends on the/ cartage. I promised to point out the sandstone quarry on my :next visit to Jtakauroa- but have not been. in.; the locality siinoe. Metalling on Hihiroroa road has been completed; metaling on Fitzgerald's road has been completed; two new, breastworks have been built on this.;road. Makaretu road contract : Progress is slow on this work ; bad' weather is partly responsible. Surveys of; the following have been made :— "Motu <Rid--ing: Stock paddocks m section 2, Xli., Motu (Ji). Thomson's); cottage site m section 5, XII., Motu (Davies) ;- stock paddocks m reserve at Racecourse ihill ; cottage site m Poututu C 4 (Wright's). Letters from Messrs Wright and Thomson re sites are submitted to the Council. No. 2 (Tiffen).- Mangakiim deviation has been completed and some retail 1 < metalling has been done on Puha-Whatatutu Boad. About 50 chains of'Mangamaia metalling has been done; the contractor, 1 Mr Cox, promised to submit a price- for opening up Mangahamia toad fit for waggon traffic., • ■'>' ;;•. ■'*■ ■■ - ..• ,'Ngatapa Riding: The hardwood timber for Semmens', Roberts', and Tangihau bridges is not yet to ! hand, but is expected m a. treek or so. The delay is solely due. to difficulty' m getting tonnage. The weather conditions have been such that practically no work Could have been done. I have: instructed him to proceed with additional metalling required as an extra- to } his contract. Messrs Casseils and Swainson have begun, "their contract and have partly metalled Krause's hill. The deviation on Bi'uce's road and general improvements have -beert carried out. It is quite possible that the new private road being construct-., od.by Mr Gray will partially or wholly ( block the traffic on Bi'tfce's road. It would be adyisable to notify Gray of his responsibility m the matter.., Karaka Riding : The formation and metalling at .R ichards 66rnei\ Kaitaratahi. hat* been completed. Barry and Kipling roads have beien metalled. The washout near Holdsworilfs wpolshed has been repaired. Government authorities : The following, authorities, are held by the Councif-— Hangarqa-Tahora road i) 250, Whareilcopae river, Roberts' bridge £200, Wharekopae-Tahora 'No. 2 £300, Motu valley £169, Motu valley ;\ £100. The works m progress: or let ' are it-*-' Roberts' bridge, Rakauroa-Tahdra metal, ling, Neill road metalling, Kanakanaia metalling. In terms of the. Hon; Minister of Public Works's' letter . of 9th Deceniber, I suggest -that application toe made through the district engineer for transfer of authorities held as. follows': Hangjaroa-Tahora road £250, transfer £130 to Wharekopae river, Roberts' bridge, thereby increasing the authority for this woric to £330, 'which is one half of the estimated price of the new bridge; transfer £120, the balance of authority, to Rakauroa-Tahora •■ metalling ; Motu valley . £169, transfer this authority to Kanakanaia road, metalling; Motu valley £100, transfer this author^ to; Kanakanaia - road metalling; Wlmrekopae-Tahora.
