BREACHES OF THE LAW.
— ; 9 (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. At the Magistrate's Court to-day, Maurice Hope was fined £5 for making a disloyal statement regarding the war to some returned soldiers m an hotel bar. The remarks led to a quarrel, m which Hope struck a soldier, whose comrades then chased him. ■■'■■ \ The Magistrate remarked that the case was not one for imprisonment. Defendant was probably under the influence of liquor when the remarks were made. William Parker was charged with a breach of the city by-law by addressing an .anti-conscription meeting m the r. street. He was fined £10, but declared ; tliat he would not pay, and was senbenc- ' ed to two months' hard labor. ■ A similar penalty was imposed m the case of John Loughnan. On a like charge, John Patrick Rea was fined £10, and GeraJd Dee, having promised not to break the by-law m future, was ordered to .come- up for sentence when called upon.
