GISBORNE ORPHEUS SOCIETY.
CONCERT AT TE KARAKA.
Our To Karaka correspondent writes : A ho ut 30 members of the Gisborne Orpheus Society journeyed to Te Karaka Jnst night to give a concert m aid of the funds of the Waikohu Red Cross Society. There was a> full house to enjoy the ' excellent, programme submitted, which went with a swing from, start to finish, and the., society may feel some reward for their assiduous practising when they realise how much pleasure their performance gave. The' chorus work, under Mr W.HBeok'g able direction, was exceedingly 'good, and tho quartette, "Te Karaka Tit-bits," which' is understood ito have been written by the society's own' poet, raised many a hearty laugh. Of the soloists, Mrs Hobday received very' hearty encores after each of her items, and Messrs Hampton, Alexander, and -East also met with a good reception; though Mr Alexander would have been heard to much better effect m a feong more suited to his powerful voice. The hit of the evening was' undoubtedly seorcd by the Yen. Archdeacon Packe, whose clever musical sketches recall the days of the inimitable Corney Grain. After the performance the visitors were entertained at supper by the ladies of the, Red Cross Society, and it is hoped that they quite understand that 'we ' shall look forward to another visit from the (rishorne Orpheus Society at an early dak*. Tin* Te Karaka band rendered a number of item's a* the entrance to the hall before the performance began.
