LONDON, May 31. . Speaking in the House of Lords today, Lord Midleton drew attention to Colonel Churchill's recent statement in the Lower House that there Mere 200,000 officers' servants and 50,00G grooms behind the lines.

ln reply, ■ Lord Kitchener . said these servants and grooms served in the trenches, and were not considered as being behind the fighting line. He thought Colonel Churchill thoroughly realised the fact.

Markham asked, in view of Dr Beth-mann-Hollweg's declaration that Germany was ready to make peace and blaming the Allies for witholding peace, whether tho Allies would inform Germany through: a neutral of the definite terms on which they were willing fo make peace provided Germany would act similarly. • *

Mr Asquith said there was nothing 'ii Dr Hollweg's statement which indicated that Germany was prepared to consider terms safeguarding the interests of the Allies and the future peace of Europe. He had nothing to add to Sir Edward Grey's recent speech. In the House of Commons .Sir A. 13. Markham asked what end was gained by not infoi'ining Germany what our actual terms of peace? would be. Mr Asquith said the question was. debatable and he could not usefully add to what he had already said.
