BOWLING.

GISBORNE CLUB. "H affords me the greatest pleasure to extend to you, on behalf of the Gisborne Bowling Club, a right hearty welcome to our green," said the President, .Mr F. Harris, at the opening of the 1915-16 season of the Gisborne Bowling Olub yesterday afternoon. "You will 1 am' sure, be pleased to learn that our membership roll has been fully maintained. During; the past year' we have been deprived of the companionship of two of our most respected members, m the persons of Mr Geo. Humphreys and Mr W. Arnold. Both of these gentlemen have passed to the Great Beyond, and to their relatives we extend our hieaa'tfielt sympathy. Mr Humjplireys was one ot the very oldest members of the club, and m years gone by on more than one occasion figured m our champion fours, and has . gathered t^e 'laurels of victory.' Mr Arnold/ though a younger member, will be missed by a large circle of friends, ajid the memory of both departed members will be long cherished. "Last year our club was successful m annexing" the 'Burton Trophy,' after, an interesting tussle. The rivalry for this coveted trophy is becoming keener, each year, a.nd I am given to understand by Napier sports that if we wish to retain it during the forthcoming year, it will be necesary to put our best foot forward. I have to express the hearty congratulations of the West End Club on the' acquisition- of their new green, and trust that the same spirit ,of friendly rivalry which ' lias existed m the past will continue m the future. Speechmaking is by no means a. strong point of mine, so that I shall now call on Mrs Harris to roll; -the jack and formally declare the Gisborae bowling green open for the 1915-1916 season. "I trust that you will spend a pleasant afternoon and that all present this afternoon — especially the ladies — will be frequent visitors during the season." i ' The usual opening-day match, President v. Vice-Presidentj was übseqnently resumed. .Some exciting games, were witnessed. The. howlers were unanimous m their praises about the splendid order of the green, and 'the caretaker (Mr W. T. .Wilson) caane m for hearty congratulations. ■ " ■ The match was won by the President's side by 157 points to 126, the scores being as follows (President's team mentioned first) — " Grieve, Oxenham, Wootton Ponsford(s) 28 v Bray J.
