OSTERLEY 'S NARROW ESCAPE.

FREMANTLE, Sept. 2

According to passengers, the mailbbal Osterley, which ' arrived at Fremantle to-day from London, had a narrow os capo from destruction by a mine a day after leaving Tilbury. They were warned by the- Admiralty that, Cortnana had been laying mines outside the mouth of the Thames, and tho Osterley, together with 30 other vessels, took refuge for days at Margate. Then they were allowed to go out m single "file, accompanied by a trawler patrol. Presently those aboard the Osterley noticed something across the bows of the vessel, but took no no- j ti.ee until some time later, when they noticed men on" the trawlers firing at theobject, which had by this time floated astern, and which turned out to be a mine. There was a terrific explosion, the water going about 60ft m the air, and the smoke of the mine about 200 ft.
