SPORT WITH THE ENEMY.
A MOCK ATTACK SETS TURKS
FIRING
Writing on July 7th, Private J. Aitken states that he is back at the front, and is not sorry. His ear was better as far as the pain went, but ho was almost deaf m one ear. The rest at . Lemnos had done him good. Lemnos is" described as rather a- nice little place. He went to several little villages about there. ' Greeks were making fortunes m selling small goods to tne wounded. Troops of all descriptions were strolling about. He arrived back at the front about. 2 a.m., and after* reporting himself, was told that tho boys were going into the trenches that morning to give the South Islanders a hand. Tliey went forward and were m the supports, so that at night they got a sleep unless the Turks attacked. They were sent to the beach occasionally, it being close on two miles of a walk. They had a good many bombs, and whilst he was writing the letter he had been watching the bombs coming and. going from both aides. They had set fire to tho enemy's trench with their bombs, and it was burning well at that moment. They had had plenty of shells over their heads the last few days, and whilst they were digging a trench one just missed them by a foot or two. The letter continues : "We had a little sport with the enemy last night. Wo nad a mock attack, which surprised them. a bit. We gave them a few rounds' of rapid fire for a start, and, then .we started to cheer. The enemy sent up lights of all sorts,, and were firing every rifle and machinegun, judging by the noise."
