Under <t.heir calm manrftr they are, a highly-strung, nervous people, who react 'very easily to good or bad news. Many of their young soldiers lost their reason under fire and went raving mad^ Their first line of troops were hard fellows, able <to bear the: fatigue and discomforts of a rapid campaign, but their second line were of nuich lower physique, because they had 'begun to live comfortably and lackk '- the stomach for war. t This revealed the essential weakness o'f the German na t-'-._ a tendency to get out of condition « at a relatively early age.
