ACCIDENTS AT TOKOMARU.

MAN RUN OVER BY MOTOR CAR. A large number of people were V Tokomaru Bay on Saturday eveninjr as a result of the sports held there that flay. Ihe taxi-cars were in great demand, and had been busily eniraced all day. About 10 o'clock in the evening, as Messrs J. R. The car immediately stopped, and the unfortunate young man was conveyed therein to Dr. Ichewen, who rendered medical aid. ■■...•■ : ■ It is understood that the car. which weighed about 26cwt, had three men and the driver on board. They were travelling towards the southern end of the township at about 12 miles an hour. The road was very narrow, and the driver of the car swerved to pass Porter, who stepped right in front as the motor came level with him. It passed across his body. At first it was feared that the man's gack was broken, but fortunately this was not the case. He was, however," severely knocked about, and was considerably bruised. While returning from the doctor's residence, the car came into collision with a horse ridden by a man named Russell. So severe was the impact that the rider was thrown into the back of tbe car. The horse was piled. up as far as the driver's seat, and had to be shot before it could be released. The driver of the car was stunned, and was- somewhat severely cut by the glass from the windscreen, which was completely -shattered. The car was much damaged. i Mr L. Wilkinson's car came upon the scene, and took the injured man to the hotel. . «

Porter was brought to Gisborne by the Westralia yesterday, and at the wharf was met by Dr Reeve. The patierit was conveyed to the hospital by the ambulance. From enquiries made to-day it was learned that tbe injured man w;as suffering severely from shock, and was considerably brnised. His condition, however,^ was a little better, and there is every hope of his recovery.
