Received September 23, 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, September 22. Scarcely a house round Rheims Cathedral was,undamaged. The statue of Joan of Arc m front of the Cathedral is undamaged. Whenever the French artillery became aggressive the Germans shelled the Cathedral.
It is estimated that between threo and five hundred civilians perished. _ . ROME, Sept. 22. The- Pope has expressed horror at the destruction of Rheims Cathedral. He remarked that it was scarcely credible that m the twentieth century we should be plunged back to the days of Attila. (Received September 23, 9.55 a.m.) PARIS, Sept. 22. Maurice Barres, - a member of tho French Academy and well-known litterateur, commenting on the destruction of Rheims . Cathedral, says : "It is satisfactory that no shells fell on our battalions. At the present moment we prefer the humblest French infantryman to the worthiest works of art. These we will re-create. Tlie essential thing is that our nation remains. This is the only reply of our artists and patriots to this deed."
