PATHETIC DETAILS.

(Received September 23, noon.) • LONDON, Sept. 22. An eye- witness at Rheims states that shells killed several German wounded m the Cathedral. Four Sisters of Mercy lay dead on the floor.

Notwithstanding the entry of a shell, women knelt round m prayer, apparent- j ly beseeching the intercession of Joan of Arc, whose statue within the Cathedral, -| like that outside, is unharmed. A shell reduced the statue of the Virgin to dust. The clergy -remained within the building, comforting the frightened people, i until the fire'started.

The belfry fell with a tremendous crash. Presently the building resembled a gigantic set-piece of fireworks. It is estimated the German visitation caused damage amounting to four million pounds sterling. 1
