DISASTER BELIEVED TO BE DUE TO ACCIDENT. , SYDNEY, Sept. 19. Rear-Admiral Patey, m charge of the Australian Expedition at New Guinea, wirelessed to Mr Pearce (Minister for Defence) that submarine AEI is missihg. It was last seen on the afternoon of September 14th, when returning from patrol duty. Ther© were no enemy dn the vicinity, and, though a search has not disclosed wreckage, it is supposed that her disappearance is due to an accident.. There were 35 officers and men aboard. The submarine's crew consisted of Lieut.Commander E. F. Besant, Lieut. L. Scarlett©, Petty-officeTS Smail, Hodge, Tripe-, Guilbertj Stretch, Maloney, Wright, and Waddylove; Seamen Corbould,,... Reardon, Woodland, Jarman, Thomas,. Fisher, Dennis, and Hodkins; Signalman Danes; .Telegraphist Baker; Artificers Lowe, Marsland, Wilson, and Fitte; "(messenger);' Stokers Bar- j ton. Meek* Guy, Wilson, Bray, Blake, Holt, Guild,'Gough, Reardon, and Wood, land. "The only gleam consolation is that the loss, was not due to action with the enemy, but the officers and men have just as praly given their services for the Empire as if they had been killed, m action.'' ' The official list give thirty-four men aboard. There is some doubt as to whether. Lieut. Moore was also aboard. Bis nam© was included, but a telegram from Melbourne states that he has been replaced by Lieut. Scarlette. Nineteen of tne crew, including Besant and Scarlette, were lent by th© Admiralty to the Australian Navy. _ Reardon's next-of-kin is given as Mrs Reardon, post office, Kaikbura. One paper states that Woodland was a son of Mrs Emma Helen Woodland, of the South Island of New Zealand, but others say that he hailed from Bagnor, England.
