The report of the committee of the Department of Agriculture on technical education m Ireland states tlhat 'the mortgage indebtedness on Irish land is probably increasing by two millions annually. The money lenders have greatly increased, whilst the go-between man has 'almost disappeared, • but an injurious amount of long , credit with shops was found m various districts, much of ifc for feeding staffs, which the farmer could himself grow. Savings of the rural classes, amotmting to v many millions, have been withdrawn : from productive use locally, and transferred for investment m London. The report adds : Assistance to economic progress of rural Ireland is possible if only- a. part of this money is available for lending to small farmers.
