LURE OF THE RACECOURSE.

I DUNEDIN, this day. In a judgment summons case heard yesterday, m which the amount involved was £1 15s 6d, for furniture supplied m September last, the defendant, a young man, stated that he was a. carter by occupation, but could not getwork. Ho (defendant) stated on oath that he was £300 m debt, m which was money borrowed, that he was m the habit of attending race meetings, and that gambling was the whole cuuse of his trouble.
Mj. 1 Widdowson, S.M., said that it Avaa quite clear defendant was obsesnefi by races. Apparently he. did not oven look after his wife and family, but put them on his relatives to keep. He was given a week to pay, with the alternative of forty-eight hours' imprisonment.
