CAPE RACE DISASTER
(Press Assn.—By Telegraphs-Copyright.) ST. JOHNS (Newfoundland), April 5. It is estimated that the • deaths at Newfoundland total 75. s The King has sent a message of sympathy to the bereaved relatives. Tho Southern Cross has not yet been found and additional search steamers are starting.
A previous cablegram stated -.—"The steamer Newfoundland reports that the sealing vessel Southern Cross has been nipped between two ice-floes off Cape Race. The crew, thinking that the vessel would be crushed to pieces, attempted to make their way ashore by way of the icefloes, but were overcome by the cold and many' perished. The Newfoundland eventually rescued 50. some m a dying condition. Another sealing steamer, the Bella* Ventura, reports the rescue of 30 badly frost-bitten survivors. Forty dead were foimd, and 30 are still missing. The search on the ice floes still continues.
