At the Hospital Board meeting last night, the resignation of Nurse Olive Malcolm was accepted with regret. I Mr O. E. Armstrong, district engineer, is at present on an inspecting visit m the W T airoa. district: Mr Howard Kenwa'v was formally sworn m before Mr W. A. Barton, S.M., to-day as a Justice of the Peace. V^Mr and Mrs John Clark are leaving Monday on a visit to the Old Oountry. Mr W. E. Akroyd, District Valuer, leaves for Napier to-morrow evening for the purpose of a special inspection of Tongoio estate. A presentation took place at the Borough Council yards to-day to Mr H. R. Ogier, the storekeeper., who is leaving shortly for Brisbane. A beautiful album of 1 New Zealand views was presented on behalf of the staff by Mr C- Fraser, with good wishes for _♦__• Qgier's future welfare. Mr K. S. Williams, of Tuparoa, has definitely decided to contest, the Bay of Plenty seat m the interests of the present Administration. Mr Williams is ohairmnn of the Waiapu County Council, ami is one of the most prominent feettlers m the Waiapu. He will oppose the sitting member, Mr W. D. S. Mac Donald. Mr W. E. Goffe, of the Native Land Court, has received the appointment of Land Purchase officer. Mr Goffe, whose headquarters will presumably be at Gisborne, will operate under the direction of the Land Purchase Board, Wellington, and native owners requiring to dispose of th-rr interests will be required to make th ' - offers through him. Mr Goffe was m clnrge of the- Native Land Purchase Department at Wanganui for some eight years, and the experience thus gained, together with his complete knowledge of .the East Cbast lands, should enable him to perform valuable service to the State m the way of acquiring land for settlement. On Friday evening, the 27th March, a large gathering of residents and settlers of Qtoko and surrounding districts assembled, to bid farewell to Mrs Arbon, who has been postmistress there for the past four and a half years. Owing to the inclemency of the weather the committee had decided to postpone the function until some future date, but the storm having abated on Friday, morning, it was decided to proceed with the ceremony. So large was the assemblage that only half of . the audience could find seating^ accommodation. Mr. W. D. Bruce, chairman, announced that, owing to the stormy weather, bad roads, awd swollen rivers, some of those who I]^_4 kindly offered to contribute to the evening's entertainment were unable to bo present. However,. Mr R. Bilham had kindly placed his, gramaphone at their disposal, and interspersed with some excellent records, numerous items were contributed by local talent, including Messrs Roe,*Babbington, White, Edwards. Taylor and several Natives, and altogether a most enjoyable programme was provided. During the evening the cliairman presented Mrs Arbon with an address on behalf of the residents, expressing appreciation of her kindness and courtesy," and of the general esteem and respect m which she was held by all, and wishing her happiness and prosperity. Mrs Arbon was also handed a well-filled purse of sovereigns as a. token of esteem.
