THE WEATHER.

There was a general moderation of the weather throughout -the district yesterday, and with the cessation of heavy rain the rivers and creeks went down considerably during the night. The waters from tho Waipaoa, which came over at Tietjen's bend, and ran through Pouparae down to Makauri yesterday, receded during the night. The miniature flood did very little damage, Mr Kimber's loss of hoggets being about the most serious. By dint of hard work the gang ,put on to effect repairs to the Public Works line between Otoko and Matawai got things sufficiently far, advanced by noon to permit* the train - (which had been held up on Tuesday night by a washout) getting down to Otoko. The passengers' got aboard and set but ,for Matawai, but another big washout opposite Mr Clark's place, near Matawai, again stopped the train, and the passengers continued their journey on foot. A gang of men was put to work on this part of the line, and a temporary bridge was erected, which enabled ...the train to proceed. As far as the other portion of the railway works are concerned they have not suffered any great damage from the weather. .The slips on the Motu-Opotiki road will be removed as soon as toe weather clears up. During the 24 hours up to 9 a.m. today only 0.5 of an inch of rain fell m Gisborne. Thick rain was experienced this afternoon. The beaches are strewn with drift wood, and many people are at work collecting a supply of firewood. Ojir correspondent at Tokomaru Bay advises that heavy rain had set m there again to-day. Mr T. Hay, of Te Karaka, states that his" maize crop was not affected by the flood, as reported yesterday, and that the water Avas not within 6ft pf the maize.
