Taken with the result of the Grey contest, the Lyttelton result indicates that political parties m New Zealand may m the near future undergo a great change. Both the Grey and Lyttelton constituencies have replaced moderate. Liberals with men of the Federation of .Labor type, though all possible efforts were made by the recognised Opposition to retain the seats.' If. strong Opposition candidates are unable to hold Opposition seats at by-elections, the outlook for Sir Joseph Ward's party at the elections next 'year cannot be regarded, even by party enthusiasts, as particularly • bright.
