THE TEACHERS' CLASSES.
_ PHYSICAL CULTURE. The \ teachers who returned fror Napier on Saturday evening! speak ver feighly of the value of the classes a which they attended. The work wa very 'strenuous, and 1 was vigorous! maintained. "The work of training the teachers tc drill/ and train therchildren is being oar ried out by .districts,, and arrangement; have' already Wen made to take in hano the teuchers.of Auckland and Southland Since there &t^ 640 teachers to be'trained in the northern district, this part ol the work is expected- to- occupy eight weeks, and it will 'be pctober, before the inspectors have finished with South land. Other education boards, including Wellington, are' negotiating, and periods' "of. -training have -to be arranged to suit the convenience of both sides." The instructor mentioned that 120 to 13C teachers, could be trained every fortnight. SOCIAL GATHERING. A very pleasant social gathering, took Slace in St. Paul's, schoolroom -on Thursay afternoon, when '.'. the lady teachers who have been attending the cousre of instruction in physical culture during the past two weeks- entertained the male teacners, together with the instructors of both iseetions, .at afternoon tea. , The '.Mayer, Mr J,. Brown, M.P., presided," and irt" the course of a short address, ill which he heartily welcomed the teachers^ tq Napier, 'said that no one who had, witnessed the exercises performed ;by the teachers during the continuation of -the clashes could fail .'to be impressed with. a*'serise of the benefits likely to be derived froinVucH exercises, and he hoped* to see: the teachers here again nex% year for another ' " similar period of instruction. - \ Durijiig the afternoon ' presentations were made to each of the instructors. The twptjady instructors, Misses Larsen and Heritage, were each presented-, with floral' designs. Miss Faubert made . the presentations, and expressed the appreciationof '. the" ladies' classes r at. the manner in which the- instructors had carried out tieir.-wqrk. Misp Heritage, replied for bdfh instructors. The male classes also niSSe' Presentations 'to their instructors. Sergeant-Major Just, in charge of Squad B>;was. presented by . the members of that squad with . a „ handsome silver hot-water jug, "fiaryey making the presentation and the incipient suitably responding: 'Sijuad' A ■■'■ presented their instructor,- Sergeant-Major Jack Johnson, with" 4 a wristlet . watch.' Mr S. B. Curd, who made the presentation, said the instructor would no doubt consider this Was intended as a gentle re-minder,-of the '■' 'marking time" which the squad, had been doing in their'exercises.
