There were subterranean rumblings throughout the day, and a great panic ensued. Churches and other buildings were badly damaged. Many houses were rendered uninhabitable. A number of deaths were caused, being due to falling masonry. Most of the bakeries were destroyed, and bread has to be obtained from neighboring villages.
