ARBITRATION COURT.
(Per Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, this day. Tho Arbitration Court delivered judgment m a case m which the City Corporation appealed against two convictions by Dr. McArthur for breaches of the Tramway Employees Act m regard to employees at the power-house. In dismissing the appeals, the Court held that though there was a flaw m the Arbitration Amendment Act, 1911, an appeal could not be made from the Magistrate's Court to* the Supreme Court or Arbitration Court unless the amount of the claim exceeded £50, whereas m the present case only ±510 was claimed m respect to each breach. The Court added that whereas the draftsman ha<i intended to enlarge the right of appeal, he had curtailed it.
CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The Arbitration Court this morning granted two exemptions from the cycle workers' award on the grounds that the union was unable to show that the firms concerned were actually employing hands within the scope of the award m the cycle trade and aerated waters trade, although the parties had agreed to clauses m the previous award. The Court ruled , that it was entitled to substitute clauses of its own. "If you want an award," said Judge Sim to the •workers' representative m one case, "the clause must be m accordance with Court practice. The parties cannot agree to any rubbish they like, and then say the Court shall declare it an award."
The journalists' case is set down for Thursday morning.
