RAINFALL STATISTICS.
(Per Press Association.) WJELLINGTON, last night. The collection of rainfall statistics inaugurated at the chief centres of population m JNew Zealand away back m the fifties has been,, gradually' extended arourid the coasts, and to a certain extent inland, by .the Meteorological Office, but m connection with forecasts of river floods and development ,of witer power these coastal stations have proved m- i sufficient. Iri ."order to meet these requirements a large number of rain gauges were recently obtained, with the object of establishing additional stations on the high lands, and at sources and along the banks of the principal livers. It is anticipated these will yield a large mass of additional information which will be of the greatest commercial advantage m future years. Many of these stations will be established m connection with country post offices, but applications will be welcomed from private persons inter-' ested m rainfall who are prepared to undertake the duty of observation. Such applicants will be supplied with rain gauges and necessary instructions by the Dominion JsTeteorologist, and the results will- be recorded and published m the Gazette, with other meteorological observations and utilised m the meteorological survey of New Zealand. An important Aspect of this work Avill be fuller observation of rivers % and possibilities of floods m lower reaches subject to inundation. '
