SCHOOL CELEBRATIONS.
Empire Day, which falls on May '24, was celebrated, together with the King's birthday, at the Mangapapa and Kaiti schools this afternoon.
At Mangapapa school, after the Hag had been saluted 'and the National Anthem sung, the elder children were assembled m one of the large rooms, where speeches appropriate to the occasion were made. Mr T. Ellery, chairman of the School Committee, presided. In explaining the nature of the occasion, Mr Ellery said the children might wonder what their small minds had to do with so great an Empire, but he would remipd them that the world was made up of small things, which all had a part to fill.
The Rev. F. W. Chatterton, m the course of ah interesting address referred to the mightiness of the Enipire. As to whether their Empire would remain mighty depended on the character of the people. Oil the football field things necessary were order, justice; and combination, and every unit must do his part, ai|d- these were some of the things necessary m the British Empire, if they would make it strong. They could not i.aye a strong Empire unless they had strong homes, and this was a matter more for the girls. They could all do their share. There were three things that spoilt a horne — idleness, selfishness, and ill-temper. The opposite to these were industry, unselfishness, and cheer : fulness, and these were the things they wanted to cultivate if they would help to kieep their Empire strong and help it to grow stronger. Mr M. McLeod, one of the members of the Hawke's Bay, Education Board, referred td the late Mr W: L. Rees, who, he said, was never idle, and was one of the most ' unselfish men /there was, and as an Empire builder he did not have an equal. MV McLeod spoke of the great assistance Mr Rees had rendered the school, and his remarks were endorsed by Mr Cole, the headmaster. < At. ..the : instance of Mr E. S. Goldsmith, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the Rev. Mr Chatterton for his interesting address.
